Prior to making this artwork, I kept looking at old photographs of London, from around the turn of the 20th century. And every time I looked, I felt drawn to the less affluent parts of London, and they were many. A few old photos captured my imagination, almost all from the East Side of the capital. The painting you see here was inspired by a few of these old photographs, but in particular by a street named Three Colt. I imagined a close knit community of Londoners, and tried to reflect a moment in a day in their lives, where proud shopkeepers tended to their premises, sometimes surrounded by their families, their neighbours and other trades people. 40 x 30 cm. Acrylic on canvas board.
